Mud Lake (October 10, 2018)

My daughter and I went to a fauna reserve called Mud Lake. It's located on the Ottawa river, near Britannia. There, we saw some beautiful Wood Ducks. Back home, I made a small video out of the pictures I took. I hope you enjoy.

MosaiCultures (2018)

MosaiCanada 150 was such a success that the organizers decided to have the floral exhibition for another year (this time, they charged an entry fee). That became known as MosaiCultures 2018. Some of the previous year displays were kept or modified and new ones were added. Again, this exhibition was a great success.

Blue Heron fishing at Hog’s Back (2018)

During our visit to Hog’s Back Falls, Marie-Annick and I were also able to watch a Blue Heron catching a fish. Its technique is totally different from the one used by the Night Heron. From his higher vantage point, it watches the water and thanks to its keen eyesight, rapidly localises its prey and thrusts forward its long beak and catches it. However, it’s the same technique for swallowing the fish, whole and alive. Then it needs to take a few gulps of water to help the fish swim down its throat.

Night Heron fishing at Hog’s Back (2018)

During our visit to Hog’s Back Falls, Marie-Annick and I were able to watch a Night Heron catching a fish. It utilises a very interesting technique: in order to attract its prey, it puts its beak in the water and opens and closes it rapidly. The noise attracts the fish, thinking that there must be some kind of insect trying to swim out of the water, and when it’s close enough, the Night Heron catches the poor gullible fish. Then the Night Heron swallows its prey whole. I hope this is not the way you are going to eat your next perch fillet.

Hog’s Back Falls (2018)

Around mid-August, Marie-Annick and I went to see the Hog’s Back Falls (also known as Prince of Wales Falls). They are located in Ottawa, on the Rideau River. We wanted to take some pictures of herons and we were lucky enough to watch some in action. This video gives you an overview of the Falls. It’s a very noisy place because of the various water falls and the amount of water that goes over them.
